Why is Wei Qingguang, a world champion, so respected by both China and Japan?

In the history of Chinese table tennis, there is a legendary figure. When he went to the sports school to practice table tennis, the sports school did not want him; later, he was 23 years old and only joined the national team as a sparring partner; when the national team was finalizing the list of participants in the Olympics, he was the last one to be reluctantly squeezed into the roster. But even so, he won the national, Asian, and world championships one after another. Later, he joined the Japanese national team and competed for Japan. At the Asian Games, he defeated Ma Lin first and then Liu Guoliang, winning a precious silver medal for Japan, greatly improving the level of Japanese men's table tennis. Later, he served as the head coach of the Japanese men's table tennis team for many years and was known as the "Godfather" of the Japanese men's table tennis team. This person's name is Wei Qingguang, and his Japanese name is Wei Guan Qingguang. So, how legendary is Wei Qingguang? As a world champion in the Chinese team, why did he join the Japanese team and represent Japan in competitions?

Wei Qingguang was born in Nanning, Guangxi on July 2, 1962. In 1973, when Wei Qingguang was 11 years old, he was selected for centralized training in the Guangxi Sports Team. However, after only 3 months, he was expelled from the Guangxi Sports Team.

Why was he expelled from the Guangxi Sports Team? In fact, it wasn't because he violated discipline or didn't train hard, but because in a routine physical examination, he was found to have hepatitis.

After Wei Qingguang left the Guangxi Sports Team, his father took him to the hospital for a re-examination, and the results showed that it was not hepatitis, but that his liver function was abnormal due to his excessive amount of exercise. Wei Qingguang's father went to the Guangxi Sports Team and wanted to send his child back. However, the Guangxi Sports Team was still unwilling to accept him and insisted that their physical examination was correct and did not believe Wei Qingguang's father's examination conclusion.

Wei Qingguang's father begged for a long time and still could not let Wei Qingguang return to the sports school. Looking at Wei Qingguang, who was in tears, his father had no choice but to send him to an amateur sports school. That was a sports school that had been closed for eight years and had just been reopened. It had half-day study and half-day training.

In such an amateur sports school, Wei Qingguang cherished his hard-won opportunity and trained very hard. In 1975, Wei Qingguang represented the Guangxi team in the third National Games junior competition. It is a pity that, after all, amateur training did not go as planned. In this competition, Wei Qingguang was defeated.

Because Wei Qingguang's results in national competitions were not ideal, the Guangxi team was unwilling to keep him. At the same time, the Guangxi team coach also told Wei Qingguang's father that, on the one hand, Wei Qingguang was a little old and it was not easy to train him; on the other hand, the training was very hard, and Wei Qingguang had had liver function abnormalities due to the high intensity, so it would be dangerous to keep him.

Wei Qingguang once again faced the risk of ending his life. It was his father who saved him. Wei Qingguang's father was a military man, and he gave a military order to the Guangxi team, saying, "Even if you train him to death, I will take responsibility!

The Guangxi team was moved by the love between this father and son and finally accepted him.

After that, Wei Qingguang became more and more diligent, and his results became better and better. In 1984, at the National Table Tennis Championships, Wei Qingguang won the men's singles, mixed doubles, and team gold medals. In 1985, Wei Qingguang won the men's doubles and mixed doubles gold medals at the National Championships.

Due to such outstanding results, Wei Qingguang joined the national team at the age of 23.

23 years old is obviously a very large age. At that time, Wei Qingguang had already been nicknamed "Uncle Wei" in the Guangxi team. It is possible to join the national team at this age, and Wei Qingguang's heart is very excited.

However, the excitement is only temporary. The national team at that time had very strict requirements for athletes and adopted a one-year rotation system. In other words, if you do not perform well within this year, you will immediately return to the provincial team. Moreover, although Wei Qingguang entered the national team, he could only be a sparring partner, and his training could only be carried out on the remote third floor. The first floor is the main player, the place where the coach often visits. Therefore, the scene that Wei Qingguang faced was very difficult.

However, as the saying goes, perseverance is the characteristic of Wei Qingguang. When his father gave him the sentence, "If you die, it's my fault," it had been deeply rooted in his heart, so even if he was training on the third floor, he used his own hard work and results to attract the coach's attention. In 1986, at the Asian Table Tennis Championships in Seoul, Wei Qingguang won the men's championship. In 1987, at the World Table Tennis Championships, Wei Qingguang and Chen Longcan, a pair that was not favored, won the men's doubles championship. This was an achievement that China had not achieved in the previous World Table Tennis Championships.

In 1988, at the Seoul Olympics, the Chinese team was full of talent. Who would be sent to participate in the competition? The coaching staff continued to hesitate. When the coaching staff decided on Jiang Jialiang, Chen Longcan, and Xu Zengcai, the last person was still undecided. However, in the end, the coaching staff, after much deliberation, decided on the 26-year-old veteran Wei Qingguang. Unexpectedly, in this competition, the men's number one Jiang Jialiang, who was given a heavy responsibility, only got the fifth place in the men's singles, while Wei Qingguang and Chen Longcan passed all the way and finally won the men's doubles championship.

At the age of 23
